Special Times...

While in York, we also got to do a girls' afternoon out to see White Christmas in downtown Lancaster.
Thanks to my mom watching the kids- we were also able to drive to Philly and visit with my Mom-Mom.  We made it there just in time as they were about to shut the facility down because they had 6 reported flu cases!  We made it to see her just in time!
And we got to visit with our dear friends from Cincinnati who just moved 30 minutes from my parents- Vaughn & Sandy Engle!  It was fun to see their farm house and just see our sweet friends again in a new location!  We miss them a lot!

Christmas in York Highlights...

So I am still catching up from Christmas with my pictures.  Our trip to York at the end of December was- shall we say- eventful!  The kids got pretty sick the day after Christmas with bad coughs and we were up most of the night before we were going to leave for York.  In the morning, we wondered- should we go or not.
In the end, we are glad we went- but this is a glimpse of how sick they were- Jeremiah coughing all the time- Lydia literally passed out and lethargic for 2 whole days before she perked up a little bit.

This is the fam- toys and all at our feet- minus my brothers.
My cute little nephew- Christopher- gotta love those cheeks!
Though there was some sickness- we were able to still make Christmas cookies and Jeremiah even helped Uncle Mike with a pizza night!  And we celebrated Aunt Rachel's 31st birthday!

Cousins in York...

These are a few pictures of the cousins in York during Christmas!
I think Jeremiah is checking Christopher's heartbeat- such a funny kid!

On another note- my mom fell on Saturday on some ice and fractured her wrist- we are praying for her this week as she is keeping it elevated and iced so that she does not have to have surgery next week.  Michael's mom has been struggling with dizziness this week and unable to work right now.  We are praying for these 2 moms- they will recover quickly!

Snow & Tulips...

Monday morning it snowed- we went out to enjoy the slight dusting.
We haven't had much snow this winter so here are a few winter pictures- in case we don't get any more.

And my sweet mentor friend Becky gave me these sweet tulips on Sunday!  They sit on my table reminding me of the promise of spring and new life!  They are so happy and I am so thankful she gave them to me for this week!

Our week...

Last week, we were enjoying so much the warmer weather- we took a quick trip to the zoo on Tuesday night to enjoy the beautiful weather and then we had some Ice Cream sandwiches when we got home after we meet Daddy working at the Hebrew Union Library.
This weekend, we enjoyed a day trip on Saturday down to Louisville to visit some dear friends of ours from Seminary days!  Laura and I worked together on campus.  I remember seeing her and thinking- that is a lady I would love to get to know better- I was impressed with her quiet spirit and true sincerity and love for the Lord.  We are so thankful for David & Laura and the friends they continue to be across the miles even now across the world.  Over the last few years, as she has moved across the world with her sweet family, I have treasured our friendship more and learned from her across the distance as we have tried to Skype weekly or biweekly.  I have enjoyed our sweet times of prayer together and sharing requests with each other!  They have two sweet boys and Jeremiah quickly wanted to become a brother with those boys!  :)  Laura and I are due around the same time in a few weeks both having boys.  It was a refreshing day together- though  a bit different with trying to entertain 4 kiddos while we caught up!

Roary...

So this is one of Lydia's favorite Christmas gifts this year- Roary....
She now wants this big lion in her crib every night.  Lydia is just a little obsessed with stuffed animals.  Soon she may have no place to lay her head- her bed will be covered by stuffed animals! :)

True Beauty...

Since the Fall, I have been organizing a once a month book study for the youth girls in our church!  I am reminded how fun it is to be with youth girls!  They have so much fun, energy and laughter!  We are going through the book- True Beauty- by Carolyn Mahaney and Nicole Whitacre.  It has been a great book for me to read- especially this week as we talked about Beauty and Our Creator and as we talked about Beauty and Our Hearts!  And what a timely season to do this book even as I feel so much bigger this far a long in the pregnancy!  She states that "true beauty is to behold and reflect the beauty of God."  And it was so good to think about the character of God and how we must focus on His beauty and not ourselves.  She explains that when we try to get attention for ourselves or our own beauty- we are "glory thieves."  We are not giving God glory which is why we were created.  It is like we are at an art show and instead of focusing on God- the main attraction- we are jumping up and down trying to have people look at us- or moping in the corner because people are not looking at us.  Such good questions to ask ourselves- whose glory are we seeking?  How pleased or displeased do we become if God is praised while we are not and if we are praised while God is not.

Psalm 27:4- "One thing I have asked of the Lord, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in His temple."
Psalm 29:2- "Ascribe to the Lord the glory due His name; worship the Lord in the splendor of holiness."

Flashback Friday: Christmas 2014 at our home!

This year for Christmas was one of our off years- we stayed home for Christmas day which included going to the Christmas Eve Service at our church on Christmas Eve.  We enjoyed driving around and looking at lights before the service.  Then Christmas morning, we made cinnamon rolls and other fun breakfast treats, sang and acted out the Christmas story with our Nativity set.  Jeremiah was very excited to get to the presents this year- more than other years.  We also put a candle in a cinnamon roll to sing "happy birthday" to Jesus.  In the afternoon- we headed to the Lyons' to celebrate Christmas with them!

The Prophets...

This may sound funny but I am going to put in a plug for my hubby not only because I love his teaching but it has been so good for me since moved from Seminary to have some rigorous reminders of how to study God's Word!  Michael, is teaching a Sunday School class this Winter on the Prophets- part 1- and it is rich!!!  He is teaching us how to read the prophetic books and also each week going through some of the Prophets.  If you would like to listen- go to the following link on our church website- Evangelical Community Church.  As a mom of wee little ones- I have enjoyed so much sitting in and listening to his Sunday Schools to understand the Old Testament more as I read the Word of God!  May you be encouraged as you listen!  So that is my plug for this week! :)

Grandma Lyons

So with my computer getting malware and other things and Michael having to rework it- he has been so diligently working hard to fix the problem- I got really behind on my Christmas posts.  So I am going to do a few flashbacks- mainly for memory's sake.  Michael's grandma, Mary Lyons, died somewhat unexpectedly last month- December 12th.  Michael was surprised to learn that in her will, she asked that Michael officiate the funeral service and preach.  This led to many days of meeting with Michael's aunts and his dad over what the service would look like.  The Lord gave him much strength in the midst of finals week at Xavier and other deadlines.  And we were so grateful to celebrate Mary Lyons' life.

Season of Blessing...

Thankfully, the Lord is giving me new grace and mercy this week to face the challenges He has put before me for this new week.  He is lifting my eyes to Him and I am so thankful!  I want to remember this season- even though the next few weeks will be challenging and tough- I am praying the Lord will keep lifting my gaze to Him!

This week, I saw God's grace through the love and support of many friends and my sweet husband reminding me of gospel truth!  I am realizing that I need to allow myself to be served in this season.  My dear sister-in-law Laura, after knowing my back was hurting, offered to come up yesterday giving up her nap time (precious time) and clean my bathroom!  At first- I wanted to say "no" and then thought- I need to let her serve me and she did MUCH better than I could ever do.  Many friends have called and prayed with me over the phone which has been deeply encouraging!  Today- I walked with a friend who I consider my mentor- a Godly woman who has raised her children well and fought the fight of faith.  She bought me a pass to the Rec Center so we can walk there with the kids this year- so sweet.  Little blessings- but more than that so thankful for her gospel reminders to fight the fight of faith when my own faith feels weak!  And so friends- keep them coming.  I need these gospel reminders to fight the fight of faith!  It is war- each day to think upon the truth of the gospel and trust Him for each new day!

I have been challenged this year to keep a "Blessing Jar"- well mine might more look like a journal.  When we got married, I wrote down "Memoirs of the Faithfulness of God" and then somehow since Lydia was born- 2 years ago- I stopped writing in it.  How amazing to look back over our last 9 years of marriage, in seminary- very poor and newly married to when we first had Jeremiah and moved to Cincinnati.  It is amazing to see the goodness and blessing of God in ways we did not deserve!  And so I pulled it back out and am writing in it again!

The new year...

We came back from Christmas to find me struggling with discouragement as we begin this new year.  I feel like Satan is attacking me and I am struggling with doubt and perseverance in this leg of the pregnancy.  That coupled with the month of January- being so cold (lack of sun) and being isolated from friends that have sick families or whatever- I am struggling to fight for faith this week more than I have in a long time.  My dear hubby reminded me that it is a good reminder to me that I need to depend on Him as we begin this new year!  My hope and help needs to come from the Lord- not from myself.  I received a book at Christmas called Mom Enough- The Fearless Mother's Heart and Hope, and opened to the chapter on A Pregnant Woman's Defense Against the Schemes of the Devil.  It was just what I needed.  "A pregnant woman's endurance is based on "the immeasurable greatness of his power toward us who believe, according to the working of his great might." (Eph. 1:19)... We can do all things through Christ who strengthens you, when you ground your faith in God's sovereign goodness as the basis for your contentment... In the weakness of your back pain, and in the vulnerability of your nausea, remember your hope of salvation in Christ.  Rely on Scripture, your offensive weapon against the enemy.  Don't just not believe the lies of the devil, but speak God's truth to yourself.  Don't just not dwell on your bloated appearance and spider veins, but talk to yourself of the beauty of Christ's sacrificial love and how he have hos body up for us all.  Delight in God's grace as you let your body serve the life of another."

The Lyons' Christmas Letter 2014

Christmas Rumblings from the Lyons Den
Christmas 2014, Hebrew Union, Cincinnati, Ohio
Looking Back…
  • In January, we hunkered down for a hard winter with lots of snow, which included shoveling, sledding and building snowmen for a little boy on the go.
  • In February, Jeremiah turned 3 with a Curious George birthday party (including a visit from the Man in the Yellow Hat!), and Lydia turned 1 as we gave her a birthday blessing.
  • In March, Erin and the kids hopped a ride to York to surprise Pop-pop for his birthday, and enjoyed visiting friends at the Mission Festival at COD along the way.
  • In April, we celebrated Easter Resurrection festivities, and Michael studied for BIG exams fervently.
  • In May, supported by lots of prayer, Michael passed 3 comprehensive exams, taking one each week.  We also welcomed Erin’s sister’s baby, our nephew Christopher Santoro, into the family.
  • In June, we visited our new little nephew and spent time with our PA family; then Michael and Erin took a restful weekend hiking trip, just the two of us to the Great Smokies.
  • In July, we found out we were expecting a third little cubbie, due to arrive mid-March 2015.  We took our first camping trip with the kids—though we ended up on the ground, the kids loved camping and sleeping by Daddy & Mommy.
  • In August, Erin enjoyed a girl’s get away with some sweet friends that live far away.  Daddy was on duty with the two kiddos—he did a great job keeping them smiling each day!
  • In September, we celebrated 9 years of matrimony and enjoyed an evening getaway to the Springs Retreat ministry.
  • In October, we drove to West Virginia to meet Erin’s family at a cabin on a lake; we hiked, ate and played- our time together was worth the 5 hour drive to see family far away.
  • In November, Michael planned a conference at our church- hosting Dr. Bruce Ware which was very refreshing. Michael was busy also teaching classes at Xavier and Hebrew Union each week.
  • In December, we sadly lost Michael’s Grandma Mary, but prepared for the remembrance of Christ’s advent joyfully.
Year’s Reading Recommendations…
Montesquieu once wrote, “I have never known any trouble that an hour's reading did not assuage.” Here is a selection of our favorite reads that made us think and grow this year:

From Michael: The Hobbit, Tolkien; That Hideous Strength, Lewis; The Abolition of Man, Lewis; C.S. Lewis—A Life, McGrath; The Conviction to Lead, Mohler; The Lion’s Gate: On the Front Lines of the Six Day War, Pressfield; Scripture, Culture, and Agriculture, Davis; The Lost World of Scripture, Walton and Sandy; A Biblical History of Israel, Provan; Five Views on Biblical Inerrancy, Merrick and Garrett.
From Erin: Treasuring Christ When Your Hands Are Full, Furman; One Thousand Gifts, Voskamp; Thirty Days of Bible Study for Busy Mamas (Colossians 3), Forster; And lots and lots of kids books! J
From Jeremiah:   Everything Goes on Land/By Sea, Biggs; Busy, Busy Town, Scarry; Agnus Lost, Flack; Blueberries for Sal, McCloskey; Going on a Bear Hunt, Oxenbury; Corduroy books; Clifford books; Curious George; any book about trains, fire trucks or airplanes!  He loves selecting different books at the library each week.
From Lydia:  Mr. Brown Can Moo! Can You?, Dr. Suess; Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb, Perkins; Cat Goes Fiddle-i-Fee, Galdone; Oh, A Hunting We Will Go, Langstaff & Parker; Over in the Meadow, Wadsworth; Any book with animals in it as well as singing song books.
On Our Minds This Past Year…
School: In May, Michael took three big “comprehensive exams,” which included three all-day tests in Ugaritic, Akkadian, and Bible where he had to master everything under the sun in each subject field. He studied and prepared for one year before taking these!  We are very thankful that God mercifully sustained us through this most difficult time with prayer and good friends. He is now considered ABD (All But Dissertation) and is beginning the 2-4 year process of writing the dissertation (it never ends, does it!?).

Jobs:  This fall, Michael has taught a graduate Hebrew class at HUC and has enjoyed teaching two religion classes at Xavier University. In the meantime, he works part-time at our church, supervising the area of adult discipleship, including the new launch of community groups this year. He also continues to work at the HUC Library, tutors, and finds other creative ways of providing. Erin’s work remains demanding, but rewarding. J She labors at home with Jeremiah and Lydia, while preparing for the arrival of a little cub in March 2015. She enjoys reading to the kids, taking them out on walks and extending hospitality and serving others where she can. She takes the kids to Library story time, a music class in the neighborhood and other play dates.

Church: We were blessed this year to have Dr. Bruce Ware (a prof at Southern Seminary) teach a weekend conference on “Beholding the Glory of the Son!”  Aside from normal responsibilities at church, Michael enjoyed teaching Joshua – 2 Kings for Adult Sunday School this fall.  Erin helps in the nursery, attends the Thursday Morning Moms group, and enjoys getting together with other ladies.  This fall she has led a monthly study (True Beauty, Mahaney) with the youth girls in our home. We also enjoy attending our community group.

Children:  Jeremiah will soon be 4 in February! He is all boy, with lots of energy. He loves to ride his bike in the basement, play with friends, build train tracks, help Mommy, and read. His highlight this year was riding a Metro bus with Daddy downtown for a Father/Son date.  Jeremiah loves to pretend he is a fire truck going to help someone. He makes friends everywhere. Lydia is almost 2 years old. After many months of scooting on her bottom, Lydia finally decided to walk this fall. She loves to sing, read books, and watch mommy bake cookies (as well as eat them!). She loves to sit in our lap and cuddle (daddy’s favorite time!).  She has grown very attached to what she calls, “Gooey”: a purple ladybug pillow pet, and her “Cowey”: a Chick-fil-A cow. J  She is full of smiles, but is quite emotional at times. She also has developed a great lion “roar” in honor of her family name.

New Ways God May Grow Us This Upcoming Year…
We thank the Lord for His blessings to us this past year!  He has sustained us through every turn, providing what is good for us and for His glory!  Here is how you can pray for our family this year: Pray for our new little boy who is on the way, both for a safe arrival and for him to grow in the wisdom of God from an early age. Pray for our home as we all adjust to caring for three little lives.  Please pray with us too as we trust God to provide time and balance with Michael’s dissertation phase now. As this stage of Ph.D. studies inches forward, please keep praying that we listen to God’s Spirit for future steps we should take as a family.  Above all, ask God to open our eyes as a family to find satisfaction in Jesus alone…and we are praying the same for you too.

Seeing and Savoring Christ in Christmas…
This Christmas our family ponders a stunning event 2000 years ago. From the birth of a little baby boy, a promise of hope and new life exploded into the universe. This boy grew up in the knowledge and grace of his Father and then set his heart and mind on obeying the Father at all costs, even death on a cross. From his birth to his death to his victorious resurrection, Jesus brings a hope worth singing, “gloria in excelsis deo.” As the seasons change and Christmas comes and goes, remember the Messiah: the hope of mankind has come at last, the God-man, Jesus the King. Long ago, at many times and in diverse ways, God spoke to the fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds all things by his powerful word (Hebrews 1:1-3a).

Treasuring Christ,

Michael, Erin, Jeremiah, Lydia & Baby Brother (due March 2015) Lyons
